Deviled Egg was a heavyweight robot built by Recoil Robotics, which competed exclusively in BattleBots World Championship III.

It was an invertible, two-wheel drive robot themed around the steampunk sub-genre of science fiction. The main chassis was constructed from steel rings and featured decorative brass patterns. For weaponry, Deviled Egg was armed with a 70lb spinning drum which, despite its size, often struggled for bite against opponents. This meant it failed to deliver the big hits which became synonymous with other drum spinners in the field.

As well as their 250lb combat robot, the team also built Steamy, a non-combat robot designed purely to transport Deviled Egg in the pits. In keeping with Recoil Robotics' steampunk theme, Steamy featured a "driver" made from various metals and featured a stovepipe top-hat and chains to carry the main robot. Deviled Egg's name likely derives from the food item of the same name. Despite this, there are no links between deviled eggs and steampunk cuisine.

According to Zak Hassanein, Deviled Egg was originally supposed to be armed with an eggbeater drum spinner, but the team could not get this machined in time, so opted for a drum instead.

Although Deviled Egg did not compete again after the 2018 season of BattleBots, team captain Zak Hassanein helped out with Ed Robinson and Sharko a year later. Deviled Egg applied to compete in World Championship VI with Ed Robinson of Sharkoprion assisting with driving and maintenance, but the team were rejected. He later joined Riptide for World Championship VII.

The robot still resides with Zak Hassanein.

"Zak (the builder of Deviled Egg) asked me to drive for him this season with an all new build of Deviled Egg. Sadly, his application was rejected so I will not be there driving DE. I had hoped to surprise everyone with a cool announcement, but it is what it is."

Prior to Deviled Egg's BattleBots debut, team members Shannon and Kathy O'Hare initially formed part of fellow steampunk-themed team Clockwork L'Orange, but they were forced to withdraw after turning up with an incomplete robot.

Under the name The Deviled Egg, the robot first competed in the 2017 edition of RoboGames, where it was guest driven by competitor-turned-judge Lisa Winter. It lost by KO to Boris Badenov, before losing a judges' decision to Mouse.

Deviled Egg was later displayed at Maker Faire in 2018.

Deviled Egg vs. Sharkoprion vs. Kraken

Deviled Egg's first match in BattleBots was against Sharkoprion and Kraken in a Science Channel exclusive rumble.

The rumble began slowly with none of the robots making much contact with one other. Once Kraken started grappling with Sharkoprion, Deviled Egg attacked Kraken's tire, also ripping of a rear spike and leaving it without drive on one side. Deviled Egg was hit by Sharkoprion's disc and was flipped over. Though normally invertible, earlier damage had caused the top armor to warp in such a way that Deviled Egg's wheels were unable to touch the BattleBox floor.

Deviled Egg remained high-centered remainder of the rumble and ultimately lost to Sharkoprion.

Deviled Egg vs. Basilisk vs. Axe Backwards

Deviled Egg's next match was in a second rumble with Axe Backwards and Basilisk.

Deviled Egg is flipped completely by Axe Backwards.

Deviled Egg started poorly, taking punishment from Axe Backwards' spinning drum and losing some of their decorative armor plates. Still functional, Deviled Egg attempted to outmaneuver their opponents and managed to cause sparks as it hit Basilisk with the drum, grinding the weapon against the underside of Basilisk's flipper arm.

This seemed enough to kill it, as Basilisk no longer moving. As the fight progressed, Axe Backwards lost their primary weapon but Deviled Egg kept theirs for the remainder of the fight. Basilisk came back to life, so Deviled Egg attacked it from the side, affirming its place as the rumble's main aggressor.

Time ran out and the judges awarded a split 2-1 decision in favor of Deviled Egg.

Trivia[]

  • Deviled Egg was one of the few competitors who never fought in a 1v1 battle.
  • Outside of BattleBots, the team extend their theme to steampunk art displays and projects, designing era-specific vehicles such as bikes, cars, wagons, and even hosting steampunk rallies in their native city, Vallejo.
