Syracuse Orange, Green's college team, subsequently retired the number 72.

In November 2018, Tim Green announced that he had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as ALS or motor neurone disease, having first been informed by a doctor in 2016.[1] He featured on 60 Minutes soon after to discuss the news.[2]

As of May 2022, Green has to use his eyes to form sentences on a screen in order to communicate, as nerves and muscles in his body began to shut down. The device speaks these sentences in his own voice, comprised of recordings from past audiobook narration work. The most recent of his book publications, Final Season, tackles the struggles of ALS and was released in October 2021.[3] It became another New York Times #1 best-seller that year.
