JailBreak (also referred to onscreen as Jail Brake or JailBrake) was a middleweight robot built by students of Bradley University, Illinois, which competed in the 2009 BattleBots Collegiate Championship.

It was an invertible, two-wheel drive robot with a hexagonal-shaped chassis and a front-mounted spinning drum. The Bradley University team took two weeks to complete the machine, using parts mostly 'scavenged' from the University's machine and workshops.

Following early issues with its armor and internal systems, JailBreak endured a particularly difficult run in the Collegiate Championship. After running under its team's Pulverizer and sustaining heavy damage against Category 5, it would lose both its opening match and subsequent Loser's Bracket stand-off against Shark Tooth by knockout. Thus, JailBreak was eliminated from the competition without taking a single victory.[2][3]

Robot History[]

Collegiate Championship 2009[]

JailBreak vs. Category 5

Before its first Collegiate Championship match, JailBreak faced an early setback concerning the presence of sharp edges on its right-most corners. The issue was noticed by chief safety/tech inspector Brian Nave during its initial inspection, who advised the Bradley University team to remove these with a grinder before the robot could be allowed to compete. Further mobility issues - attributed to JailBreak's radio system - were discovered during a functionality check within the test box, which were severe enough to force Nave to end the test early.

Along with an 'inadequate' locking pin for the drum - noted by Nave as being difficult to remove - these circumstances put JailBreak at risk of being forced to withdraw. With the time available before the start of the competition, Bradley University team members hammered, wrenched and ground away at its chassis and armor panels in an effort to remedy Nave's concerns. This proved successful, with JailBreak eventually being cleared to compete after undertaking three 're-inspections' and a further functionality test. The robot itself weighed precisely 120lbs upon being placed on the scales, solidifying its place in the Collegiate Championship.

Category 5 vs Jailbreak 2

JailBreak's rear armor takes severe damage from Category 5.

In its opening battle, JailBreak was drawn against the University of Miami's shell spinner Category 5 in the main winner's bracket. When the match began, JailBreak immediately darted out of the blue square, but in doing so drove straight under the team's own Pulverizer. This unusual move stunned JailBreak for a few seconds, before the silver machine turned around, charged past Category 5 and bumped into the spiked walls on the right side of the red square. JailBreak reversed, only to turn and stop moving, allowing Category 5 to tear its right-hand side panel open from the rear.

Category 5 vs Jailbreak 5

JailBreak's drive is disabled by Category 5.

Another violent hit from Category 5 tore the entire panel clean off JailBreak, sending it flying towards the Bradley University team's other Pulverizer. At this point, JailBreak's drum was up to full speed, but the robot continued to show limited movement as Category 5 proceeded to rip the weapon off with another side-on attack. The same impact also caused JailBreak's baseplate to slide out from beneath the spinning machine. Without its main weapon, JailBreak spun around on the spot in an attempt to deflect Category 5. However, it took further damage to its left side armor, and was fully incapacitated by a blow from Category 5 which turned its power switch off.

Category 5 sent JailBreak spinning with another attack to the side, after which the Bradley University team tapped out in their awareness of their machine's total immobility. JailBreak lost by knockout as a result, and was consigned to the Loser's Bracket as Bradley University congratulated the victorious University of Miami team. Despite the destructive outcome, it was revealed afterwards that JailBreak's internals had survived intact aside from the disabled power switch. Footage of the robot's chassis being rewelded was also shown during the Bradley University team's post-match interview in Episode 1, as was Category 5 captain Andrea Suarez's praise for the team's gracious and humorous response to the match.

JailBreak vs. Shark Tooth

Now risking permanent elimination from the tournament, JailBreak next faced Shark Tooth. Very little information is available on the match as no footage was publicly released, though official BattleBots records confirm that JailBreak again lost by knockout after 29 seconds. As a result, it would be eliminated from the Collegiate Championship with a 0-2 record.[2][3]
