War Fe, pronounced War Iron, was a middleweight robot built by students from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida, which competed in the 2009 BattleBots High School Championship. It is also known to have fought in national Bots IQ competitions in 2008 and 2010-2011.[2]

The robot was of an invertible wedge-shaped design with six wheels - four at the front and two wider ones at the rear with rubber tires. The wedge profile was intended to allow War Fe to push opponents into BattleBox walls and hazards such as the pulverizers.[2]

By the 2011 BattleBots IQ Championship, a set of 'double independent reversible drums' was added to the front of War Fe's frame to provide damage capabilities.[1] These were used in tandem with an angled wedge hinged immediately in front, though the 2011 incarnation would suffer from issues concerning its speed and ground clearance.[3] War Fe also utilized mecanum wheels at the front to allow, in theory, for greater maneuverability.

Very little information on War Fe's match performances is available, though official records for the BattleBots 2009 Championships confirm that it suffered an early defeat against Slingshot in the High School Championship. Despite recovering with a win in the Loser's Bracket over Sargent Die Blase, War Fe would be eliminated entirely following a second defeat against Das Bot.[4][5] War Fe's only other documented competition was the 2011 BattleBots IQ event, where it lost to both Shrapnel and Famous Last Words.

High School Championship 2009[]

War Fe vs. Slingshot

War Fe first fought the pneumatic flipper of Slingshot in the main Winner's Bracket. BattleBots records confirm that both robots survived the full three minutes, with War Fe losing the subsequent Judges' decision.[4][5]

War Fe vs. Sargent Die Blase (Loser's Bracket)

Now confined to the Loser's Bracket, War Fe next faced Sargent Die Blase, a ring spinner entered by the YBMS Robotics Club. On this occasion, it won by knockout after 49 seconds, enabling it to maintain its place in the competition.[4][5]

War Fe vs. Das Bot (Loser's Bracket)

War Fe advanced within the bracket to fight Das Bot from Elk Grove High School. As with its first match, it lasted the full three minutes alongside its opponent, but would lose on a Judges' decision.[4][5]

BattleBots IQ 2011[]

War Fe vs. Famous Last Words

War Fe took on Famous Last Words in a fight shown in full in the Bots High documentary. However, its long design meant Famous Last Words was able to quickly get to its side and attack with its vertical spinner. War Fe's front ground clearance was then breached as Famous Last Words' primary weapon buckled their hinged wedge and had their way with pushing War Fe across the arena. Famous Last Words continued to attack until War Fe stopped moving and was counted out.[6]

War Fe vs. Shrapnel

War Fe's only other match from the event saw it face the full-body spinner Shrapnel from the 120lb High School division. Starting from the red square, it began by approaching Shrapnel, itself suffering with a non-active weapon, but caught one of the gaps in between the BattleBox floor panels. This impeded War Fe's movements as Shrapnel briefly drove up the side of its wedge at an angle, with War Fe stuck in the center for several seconds before reversing away. War Fe got underneath Shrapnel on the next occasion both robots met, but could not push its opponent back before it escaped.[7] As the match wore on, War Fe kept catching the floor gaps while frequently struggling to assert itself against Shrapnel. On a few occasions, Shrapnel rammed and pushed it from the sides and rear, though War Fe still got underneath and pursued it across the BattleBox in spite of its clearance issues. By the end of the full three minutes, both competitors were stuck together with War Fe's wedge prising Shrapnel off the floor. Shrapnel won the resulting decision.
