"The Master, really, is these two huge steel spheres. Inside the spheres are motors, batteries, speed controllers, the radio - everything it takes to drive the thing is contained in this."
Mark Setrakian on The Master during US Robot Wars 1996

The Master was a middleweight robot built by Team Sinister which competed in Seasons 2.0 and 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots. It was also registered to compete in Season 4.0, but dropped out before the tournament began.

Considered the pioneer of the thwackbot design, The Master was unique as its electronics were contained within its spherical steel wheels, and weapons were mounted to either side of the axle.

This design was later seen in a variety of robots in BattleBots and Robot Wars for the years which followed, including Season 2.0 middleweight champion Spaz. The Master had a variety of weapons including a spinning saw blade, a static spiked hammer and an electric lifting spike. The Master made it to the semi-finals of Season 2.0 before forfeiting and won a single fight in Season 5.0.

The Master was the lightest of Mark Setrakian's competitive builds, and he would also enter with Mechadon and Snake. Teammate Peter Abrahamson competed with Ronin before holding the role of Bot Whisperer during the reboot era.

Outside BattleBots[]

The Master was originally a heavyweight robot which fought during the US Robot Wars events in San Francisco. Advancing through the 1995 tournament bracket, The Master defeated Thor in the semi-final despite losing its gas-powered blade, and was declared joint heavyweight champion with fellow finalist Blendo after the latter was disqualified for being too unsafe to compete ahead of the final.

Returning in 1996, The Master was eliminated by Tazz in Round 1. It fought Red Scorpion in an end-of-competition grudge match, but lost again before losing in two heavyweight rumbles.

In 2011, The Master was inducted into The Combat Robot Hall of Fame.

Season 2.0[]

The Master vs. The Emasculator (Forfeit)

The Master was scheduled to fight The Emasculator first, but The Emasculator had technical issues and was forced to forfeit. The Master therefore won by default.

The Master vs. Subject to Change Without Reason

The Master and Subject to Change Without Reason collide.

The Master advanced to the Round of 16, where it faced Subject to Change Without Reason. The Master hits Subject to Change Without Reason's front wedge immediately and knocks off one of it's own caster wheels. A couple more hits from The Master and the gas-powered saw stopped moving. Subject to Change Without Reason continues charging at The Master and The Master started using it's inactive saw as a hammer. The Master started hitting Subject to Change Without Reason and both robots were driving close to the killsaws, with The Master driving over Subject to Change Without Reason immediately. The Master kept hitting Subject to Change Without Reason with it's inactive saw and Subject to Change Without Reason drove itself on the killsaws in an effort to avoid The Master. The time ran out and The Master won on a 36-9 judges' decision.

The Master vs. Blade Runner

This win put The Master to the quarter-finals, where it faced Blade Runner. Before the match began, Mark replaced The Master's gas-powered saw with a spiked hammer. Both robots went straight at each other and Blade Runner started spinning. Blade Runner slams into The Master multiple times against the wall. Blade Runner then manages to hit one of The Master's wheels. Blade Runner reverses into the killsaws twice and later slams The Master against the arena wall. Blade Runner starts slowing down, apparently running out of battery power, and The Master continues attacking Blade Runner with it's hammer. Blade Runner comes close to the killsaws and gets hit by The Master's hammer before the time ran out. The Master won on a 28-17 judges' decision and advanced to the semi-finals.

The Master vs. El Diablo (Forfeit)

Here, The Master was scheduled to fight El Diablo. However, The Master burned out a motor during driving practice and was unable to get running for this match. [1] The Master was forced to forfeit and El Diablo won by default. This meant that The Master was eliminated from the tournament.

Season 5.0[]

Due to its seeding, The Master was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 5.0, where it eventually faced Jack Rabbit. For this fight, Mark chose the lifting arm to counter Jack Rabbit's ground clearance. The Master won on a close 24-21 judges' decision.

Ankle Biter dominated from that point, ripping off one of The Master's treads. Ankle Biter then got underneath The Master and slammed it into the spikestrip where The Master was deeply impaled and couldn't escape. Ankle Biter won by KO at 2:27 and The Master was eliminated from the tournament.
