Sparky was a lightweight robot which competed in Seasons 3.0 and 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots. It was originally a two-wheeled robot with four caster wheels armed with a vertically-spinning bar and two hinged wedges to feed opponents into the spinner. This version of Sparky did decently, winning one battle, and the robot was completely rebuilt for Season 5.0, now with a different spinning blade and hinged skirting all around, named Sparky v2.0. However, this version of Sparky lost its first battle due to untightened gearbox screws.

After BattleBots ended, Sparky was rebuilt one last time into Sparky 3.0 and was entered into RoboGames 2005.

Season 3.0[]

Sparky vs Bambino

Sparky vs bambino after the match

Bambino after its battle with Sparky.

Sparky's first ever opponent was Bambino. This fight started with Sparky spinning up to full speed, and driving to the middle of the BattleBox where its blade impacted Bambino. Sparky then backed up, and got up to speed again before attempting to attack Bambino once more, however Bambino backed up, and Sparky only managed to nick it with its blade. Sparky then spun back up, and slammed into Bambino ripping off one of its baseball bat weapons. Sparky then attempted to spin up again, however that last hit had caused Sparky's blade to stop working as the chain tensioner got bent 90 degrees, causing the weapon chain to jam. Both bots then shoved each other around, before Sparky got under Bambino, and slammed it into the spike strip. This knocked the chain off the tensioner, and its blade started working again. Sparky then slammed into Bambino once more, ripping the other baseball bat off. However, the impact knocked the weapon chain out of the sprocket, disabling the weapon. Both bots shoved each other around for the last 10 seconds of the match. Sparky won on a 39-6 judges' decision and advanced to meet Wacker in the first TV round.

Sparky vs Wacker

Wacker vs sparky3

When the match began, both robots got their spinners up to speed. Sparky tried to maneuver to the side of Wacker, but Wacker turned and aimed for Sparky's side. Sparky tried to turn to face with its spinning bar, but it was too late, and Wacker struck the the left corner of Sparky, chipping through its plywood armor, tearing off a front wheel, and destroying a relay that powers the weapon, disabling the spinning bar. Afterwards, a second impact resulted in its right wedgelet getting torn off.
Sparky damage

In the third impact, Sparky rammed head on into Wacker's spinning blades, getting its left wedgelet torn off and having more of its plywood armor chipped off. Sparky continued to ram into the blades, even managing to get a slam on one of Wacker's wheels at one point. From the brutal assault, Sparky lost all four caster wheels and a rubber thread from both drive wheels. The entire left front was also chipped away into nothingness. Despite the immense damage, Sparky lasted to a judges' decision. Wacker won on a 34-11 judges' decision and Sparky was eliminated from the tournament.

Season 5.0[]

Sparky v2.0 vs The Pipe

After being rebuilt, Sparky v2.0 faced off in its only match against The Pipe. When the match began, the two bots rushed out of their squares and met at one of the deactivated killsaws, where Sparky v2.0 started pushing The Pipe. Not long after, however, one side of Sparky v2.0's drivetrain stopped working. Shortly after that, the other side of Sparky v2.0's drivetrain stopped working, rendering it completely immobile. Sparky v2.0 was counted out at 0:40, giving The Pipe the win by KO and eliminating Sparky v2.0 from the tournament.

As it turned out, Sparky v2.0's gearboxes came apart as a result of the screws holding them together not being tightened.
