FrostBite was a heavyweight robot built by Team Toad which competed in four seasons of Comedy Central BattleBots.

In each of its iterations, FrostBite was a four-wheel drive, box-shaped robot. FrostBite was armed with a plow for its first two seasons and a more destructive threshing drum for its final two seasons. FrostBite retired after Season 5.0 with a career-best quarterfinal finish in BattleBots.

FrostbitePrototype

The prototype for FrostBite.

The original plan for FrostBite was a robot with bowling balls for wheels. Team captain Fuzzy Mauldin theorized that bowling ball wheels would have less of a liability to getting damaged than traditional wheels. When he tested one of the wheels using a table saw, however, the bowling ball was cut through with ease, proving his theory wrong. They were swapped out for the lighter lawnmower wheels seen in the following versions of FrostBite.

Frostbite entered Season 2.0 with lawnmower wheels, each driven independently by a brushed wheelchair motor provided by NPC and running at almost twice the nominal voltage for increased pushing power. Its box-like frame was made from welded 1/8" thick steel and the ramming plow was made from 3/16" steel, measuring 38" wide. This version proved to be the most successful, reaching the Top 8 before losing to future three-time runner-up Voltronic.

Frostbite was rebuilt for Season 3.0, again sporting a 1/8" steel frame which was slightly smaller than before, weighing around 10lbs less as a result and allowing for larger batteries. The 1/4" thick steel snowplow could now articulate, powered by an electric linear actuator. It was also reinforced and had a sharper leading edge. This version was dubbed Frostbite 2.0 and despite offering improvements across the board, fell in the Round of 32 to HexaDecimator.

Frostbite 3.0 was designed and built in time for Season 4.0, sporting a brand new kinetic weapon known as a thresher drum. This drum consisted of a 1/4" thick steel shaft with a total of nine 4.6lb steel teeth attached. It was driven by a 36v MagMotor and powered by 168 Nickel Metal Hydride 3Ah battery cells, allowing a top speed of 3300rpm. However, an especially tough draw against Team Loki and Surgeon General saw both of its right side wheels torn away, abruptly ending FrostBite's season.

The fourth edition of Frostbite, dubbed Frostbite 4.0, switched to Magmotors for drive which allowed it to reach speeds in excess of 10mph. The drum could now reach up to 3600rpm according to Fuzzy Mauldin, but was otherwise unchanged. Skipping the preliminary rounds again in Season 5.0, FrostBite lost its opening battle to Omega-13 and suffered another early exit.

Robot History[]

Season 2.0[]

FrostBite vs. Punjar

Frostbitevspunjar lv00

FrostBite and Punjar collide.

After receiving a bye, FrostBite eventually fought Punjar. Both robots met in the middle of the arena and it became a pushing match. After Punjar got caught on the killsaws, FrostBite went straight at Punjar, but got caught up the sloped front of Punjar, who drove FrostBite into the arena wall. Frostbite escaped and pushed Punjar into the killsaws. The shoving match continued, and although both could push about equally, the speedier FrostBite got more good shoves on Punjar into the killsaws and the pulverizer. The match ends with more shoving of both robots while time runs out. FrostBite won on a 30-15 judges' decision and advanced to the Round of 16, where it faced OverKill.

FrostBite vs. OverKill

FrostBite pins OverKill against the spikestrip.

Both robots met in the middle of the arena and FrostBite was attacked by OverKill, before getting shoved against the arena wall. FrostBite then got too close to the killsaws and took a ride on them a couple times, damaging the drive train and underside. OverKill then received a shot from the killsaws itself, which was so powerful, OverKill was launched onto FrostBite's back. Both robots continued to push each other around, with FrostBite generally getting the upper hand due to having a lower center of gravity and a greater amount of torque. OverKill however, still attempted to line up for a good weapon hit on Frostbite. A few blows were landed, but minimal damage was done to FrostBite's body shell. After more shoving and hitting, neither robot was able to do a significant amount of damage and the time ran out shortly after. FrostBite won on a close 23-22 judges' decision and advanced to the quarter-finals, where it faced Voltronic.

FrostBite vs. Voltronic

Voltronicvsfrostbite lv00

Voltronic drags FrostBite to the killsaws.

FrostBite was charged at by Voltronic almost immediately, but Voltonic missed and FrostBite retaliated by pushing Voltronic's rear, only for Voltronic to escape and match FrostBite's push head-to-head. FrostBite drove Voltronic back towards the killsaws, but failed to stop in time, causing both of them to take a shot when FrostBite attempted to reverse away. After more pushing matches that seemed to be in FrostBite's favor, FrostBite's front wheels were unable to move, likely because the Vantec speed controller didn't have enough power as some of the battery cells had drained. This allowed Voltronic to get under Frostbite's rear and carry it to the killsaws, taking itself over them in the process. FrostBite was then slammed against the spikestrip by Voltronic, causing Voltronic to lose its hold as it backed away. Both robots then seemed to struggle to move, looking nearly immobilized. This was until Voltronic came alive and rammed FrostBite, shrugging off another hit from the killsaws and backing FrostBite into the spikestrip. Voltronic proceeded to back up, repeating the motion multiple times on FrostBite, still too immobile to move away in time, until time ran out. Voltronic won on a 27-18 judges' decision and FrostBite was eliminated from the tournament.

Heavyweight Royal Rumble

FrostBite wasn't finished however, as it participated the Heavyweight Royal Rumble at the end of the tournament. FrostBite was one of seven robots still moving in the end, but lost out to Tazbot.

Season 3.0[]

FrostBite vs. Circuit Breaker

Due to its seeding, FrostBite was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 3.0, where it eventually faced Circuit Breaker. In this match, FrostBite was able to get underneath Circuit Breaker and pushed it onto the killsaws. FrostBite backed up and it was waiting for the killsaw to toss Circuit Breaker to the middle of the BattleBox. Circuit Breaker stopped moving and it was being counted out. FrostBite won by KO and advanced to the Round of 32, where it faced HexaDecimator.

FrostBite vs. HexaDecimator

HexyDvsFrostBite sf01

FrostBite gets flipped by HexaDecimator.

In this close match, HexaDecimator flipped FrostBite four times, one of which bent the flipping arm. This meant that HexaDecimator couldn't get underneath FrostBite from the front. After this, FrostBite was pushing HexaDecimator from the side for most of the match. Finally, FrostBite pushed HexaDecimator onto the killsaws multiple times and the time ran out shortly after. In the end, HexaDecimator won on a close 23-22 judges' decision and FrostBite was eliminated from the tournament again.

Heavyweight Consolation Rumble

FrostBite wasn't finished however, as it participated the Heavyweight Consolation Rumble at the end of the tournament. For this rumble, Fuzzy Mauldin let his son Danny drive FrostBite. FrostBite's first target was SlamJob. It then backed into Towering Inferno. Junkyard Offspring went straight at FrostBite and FrostBite was pushing Junkyard Offspring toward the spikestrip. Junkyard Offspring escaped and FrostBite pushed Junkyard Offspring against the rear of SlamJob. Towering Inferno then struck FrostBite with its hammer. It then went at SlamJob again. Little Sister got underneath the left side of FrostBite and flipped it onto its back. Unfazed, FrostBite tackled Towering Inferno, then went for Little Sister. Next it went for SlamJob again, then it tackled Kill-O-Amp. It got hit by Towering Inferno until Kill-O-Amp attacked. It then started chasing Little Sister before going back at Towering Inferno, whom it pushed into the wall. It was one of few robots still moving in the end, but lost out to Little Sister and Kill-O-Amp.

Season 4.0[]

FrostBite vs. Surgeon General

As a seeded competitor once again, FrostBite was allowed to bypass the preliminary rounds of the Season 4.0 heavyweight division. Entering the tournament in the Round of 32 stage, it would fight Surgeon General and Team Loki in the first televised match of Episode 5.

"I hope to hit him... spinner to spinner and we'll see what happens."
— Michael Mauldin quickly summarizes his battle strategy

Both robots approached each other tentatively from each side of the BattleBox. FrostBite, starting from the blue square, made a few lunges at Surgeon General, which weaved and repeatedly drove around in avoidance of its cutting weaponry. Eventually, both robots collided in the center, resulting in Surgeon General's flywheel being violently torn off. FrostBite, however, received more substantial damage, with both of its right wheels and their shafts having also been ripped out on impact.

SGeneral vs Frostbite SF01B

The aftermath between Surgeon General and FrostBite.

FrostBite turned around on its left wheels, at which point it became pinned under Surgeon General. Neither robot could pull free from each other. In its desperation to move, the left drive chain on FrostBite jumped from its sprockets, immobilizing it completely. Several moments passed with no further movement, until Surgeon General was freed and backed away. FrostBite was repeatedly shoved back towards the blue square, then into the neighboring killsaws, while passively carrying its opponent's discarded disc.

"FrostBite's nothing more than a scrapheap!"

While being nudged one last time by Julio Roqueta's machine, FrostBite was counted out, eliminating it from the heavyweight division by knockout.

Bil Dwyer: "Now sink your teeth into this Taco Bell Replay! The first devastating hit... boom! When horizontal meets vertical. In this case, vertical wins!"
Tim Green: "It was all Surgeon General, and the killsaws finish off the carcass of FrostBite."

Due to its seeding, FrostBite was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 5.0, where it eventually faced Omega-13. Omega-13 won on a 28-17 judges' decision and FrostBite was eliminated from the tournament once again.

Heavyweight Consolation Rumble

Nightmarehit

FrostBite wasn't finished however, as it participated the Heavyweight Consolation Rumble at the end of the tournament. For the rumble, FrostBite sported Colson wheels. It first struck Diskontent, then got its spinning blades underneath the right side of the immobile Spitfire and backed away. FrostBite continued damaging Spitfire's right side and Spitfire took a big hit from Nightmare's spinning disc. It then tackled M.O.E.. Next, it struck the rear of Little Sister, who pushed FrostBite into the wall, then pinned in the pulverizer's area. Next, it tangoed with M.O.E. again. It also rammed Nightmare right in the disc, though the disc was switched off at the moment. In the end, FrostBite won the consolation rumble overall with Little Sister, but was unable to fight again due to an incident involving Nightmare.
