Not to be confused with Black Dawn, the superheavyweight competitor later renamed Black Knight.

The Black Knight (also simply referred to in later incarnations as Black Knight) was a superheavyweight robot which competed in Seasons 4.0 and 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots, along with the 2009 Pro Championship in heavyweight form.

All incarnations of the robot shared a similar design, being a box-shaped robot with a black paint scheme and an overhead spinner with twin hammers as the main weapon. The Builders Database lists The Black Knight's hammers as weighing 16lb each.[2] Over time, the design of The Black Knight evolved with different drivetrain layouts, the original Season 4.0 version using six internally-mounted wheels. For Season 5.0, this was exchanged for a four-wheel drive configuration with external wheels, which was further reduced to two-wheel drive for the 2009 Championships.

The Black Knight enjoyed limited success throughout its career, often being eliminated in the preliminary stages of each tournament it entered.

Under their original incarnation as The Covina Guys, the Mechanical Reduction team also competed in Comedy Central Season 5.0 with the heavyweight Der BiterBot and lightweight The Axecutioner, with equally unsuccessful results.

Robot History[]

Season 4.0[]

The Black Knight vs. Dreadbot

The Black Knight's first-ever BattleBots match saw it face the Silicon Valley Destruction Company and their shufflebot Dreadbot in the untelevised preliminary rounds. Its spinner proved too slow to damage the tough armor of Dreadbot, which rammed and shoved The Black Knight across the BattleBox and into one of the walls. The Black Knight escaped the spike strip, but could no longer spin up its weapon, leaving it vulnerable to more ramming attacks from Dreadbot. After getting pushed into the walls a few more times, The Black Knight was left stuck in the corner, at which time The Covina Guys tapped out. Dreadbot won by knockout, eliminating The Black Knight from the superheavyweight division.[3]

Season 5.0[]

Black Knight vs. Angriff

An updated Black Knight returned for Comedy Central Season 5.0, where it was again required to start from the untelevised preliminary rounds. Here, it fought Angriff, but as before was defeated by knockout and eliminated from the superheavyweight division.[1]

Pro Championship 2009[]

Black Knight vs. Surgeon General

Having been converted to a heavyweight machine following BattleBots' cancelation, Black Knight returned for the 2009 Pro Championship, initially facing fellow Comedy Central veteran Surgeon General. Official match records from the event suggest that Surgeon General won by knockout after 21 seconds, consigning Black Knight to the Loser's Bracket at this early stage.[4][5]

Black Knight vs. Hugs & Kisses

After receiving a bye, Black Knight was next scheduled to fight Hugs & Kisses for a chance to continue in the tournament. However, official BattleBots records document it as having forfeited the match for unknown reasons, eliminating Black Knight and its team with a 0-1 match record.[4][5]
