Backlash was one of nine BattleBots competitors produced by Jakks Pacific in 2001 as part of their Battle Bashers line of toys.
It was based upon the Season 2.0 version of Jim Smentowski's middleweight robot, evident by the design of its primary weapon and the stabilizers either side of the disc. However, this toy lacks the extended axles protruding through the drive wheels which were present on Backlash from Season 1.0 to 3.0.
The drive wheels could be powered by a friction motor which was connected to a small pulley to the right side of the toy's weapon via O-ring. Much of the robot's detailing is replicated on this toy, including the decal for Smentowski's own website, Robotcombat.com, the weapon bracing and bolt patterns across the armor.
As with other toys in the range, Backlash had a trigger button which, when activated, would 'explode' the robot. In the case of Backlash, its rear armor would split down the center, revealing several of its internal components.
