"I realized just how much energy could be stored in a rapidly rotating mass... a lot!"
— Jim Sellers, BattleBots: The Official Guide

Afterthought was a lightweight robot that competed in Seasons 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots.

It was a yellow and red robot armed with a 10lb steel disc spinning at 2500rpm.[1] It measured 18 inches in diameter and was mounted on an angle. Afterthought was surprisingly well-armored, as exemplified in its lengthy duel against Ziggo, where it was able to absorb multiple blows from the shell spinner while sustaining very little structural damage. Afterthought did well in competition, reaching a career best quarter-final run in Season 2.0. The robot was built by Jim Sellers of the Robot Action League, who previously entered Rasta into the 1999 Long Beach event.

Jim Sellers sadly passed away in 2016, confirmed by former teammate and current BattleBots judge Lisa Winter.[2]

Afterthought returned for a Lightweight Consolation Rumble at the end of the tournament. Afterthought started moving around the arena and got its spinning disc on the right side of Dr. Inferno Jr.. Afterthought escaped and decided to hit Ziggo with its spinning disc. Afterthought then got its disc on the rear of Endotherm and moved to the center of the BattleBox. Afterthought went straight at Sallad with its spinning disc, but Sallad pushed Afterthought against the spikestrip and was left there for a brief amount of time. Afterthought escaped and started attacking Chiabot with its spinning disc. Afterthought tried to attack Mouser Mecha-Catbot next, but it was being pushed by Sallad and Cereal Box Killer. Afterthought was moving very slowly and managed to hit the left side of Rott-Bott 2000 as it was riding on top of Sallad. Afterthought was then pushed on top of the immobilized Ziggo and was left there for the rest of the rumble. Sallad, Cereal Box Killer, Rott-Bott 2000 and Mouser Mecha-Catbot were declared winners of the Lightweight Consolation Rumble.

Season 2.0 []

Afterthought 2.0 vs. Delta II

Delta 2 destroyed

Afterthought 2.0 tearing the armor of Delta II.

Afterthought's first match in Season 2.0 was against Delta II. In the match, Afterthought 2.0 made the first move and attacked Delta II from the side, ripping a huge gash in Delta II's thin armor with its spinning disc. After backing off, Afterthought 2.0 attacked again, tearing out more armor as Delta II spun in place, trying to deflect the blows. After several more hits from Afterthought 2.0, more pieces of Delta II's armor were torn away. One particularly large hit tore away most of the armor and one of Delta II's spikes as well, flinging it across the arena. After this hit, Delta II's mobility was seriously limited, and it could only spin in place. Most of Delta II's armor was gone, so Afterthought 2.0 attacked the delicate electronics of Delta II who completely stopped moving. Afterthought 2.0 won the fight by knockout and moved on.

Afterthought 2.0 vs. Das Bot

Afterthought hits DasBot

Afterthought 2.0 hits Das Bot with its spinning disc.

Advancing to the Round of 16, Afterthought 2.0 faced the previous season semi-finalist, Das Bot. Both robots went straight at each other and Afterthought 2.0 immediately started attacking Das Bot with its spinning disc. Das Bot then lifted Afterthought 2.0 and pushed it over the killsaws. Afterthought 2.0 retaliated and started ripping pieces of Lexan armor off of Das Bot, including a side panel. Both robots drove themselves into the killsaws and then Afterthought 2.0 fought back at Das Bot. Das Bot then lifted Afterthought 2.0, but it wasn't able to flip it. Afterthought 2.0 ripped more armor off Das Bot until time ran out. Afterthought 2.0 won the fight on a 26-19 judges' decision and advanced to the quarter-finals, where it faced Ziggo.

Afterthought Ziggo

Afterthought on its back for the final time after a clash from Ziggo.

Before this match, Afterthought's builder added a block of wood to the back of Afterthought in hopes of disabling Ziggo then attacking. At the start of the match, Afterthought 2.0 went straight at Ziggo whilst spinning up it's disc as Ziggo started spinning. However, Ziggo drove away from the blue square and Afterthought 2.0 started to chase it, Afterthought 2.0 tried turning to continue to chase Ziggo, but it accidentally drove onto the entry ramp, high centering itself. Ziggo came back to attack and sent pieces of Afterthought 2.0 flying whilst ricocheting off of the arena wall, but this hit freed Afterthought 2.0 as it came back for another attack against Ziggo. Both robots clashed again with repeated attacks as Afterthought 2.0 lost more of its static spikes, along with its sacrificial wood armor. Ziggo lined up for another hit but the Hellraisers had lifted part of Ziggo off of the ground, causing it to go flying towards Afterthought 2.0 and striking Afterthought 2.0 at full speed. This impact flipped Afterthought 2.0 and sent Ziggo flying back towards the Hellraisers, which had not been lowered yet, thus causing Ziggo to get caught underneath the Hellraisers. The match was paused as Ziggo was separated from the Hellraisers and Afterthought 2.0 was flipped back over. As the match got going again, Afterthought 2.0 started spinning its disc again and hit Ziggo as it was trying to spin it's shell. After Ziggo got its shell spinning, it hit Afterthought 2.0, which was followed by another hit from Afterthought 2.0, the next hit from Ziggo flipped Afterthought 2.0 again and Afterthought 2.0 was counted out.

Ziggo won the fight by KO at 1:55 and Afterthought 2.0 was eliminated from the tournament again.

Lightweight Royal Rumble

Afterthought 2.0 also fought the Lightweight Royal Rumble at the tournament despite no longer having its spinning disc. It was unable to cause damage during the fight and it lost its left side of drive halfway through the rumble. Afterthought 2.0 Ultimately lost out to HammerHead.

Season 4.0[]

Afterthought vs. The Crusher

Returning for Season 4.0, Afterthought's first match was against The Crusher. While Afterthought was having driving issues, The Crusher drove itself under the spikestrip and couldn't free itself. Because of this, The Crusher was counted out and Afterthought won the match by TKO.

AfterthougtvsSlapEmSilly

A flipped Afterthought is pushed into the pulverizer by Slap Em' Silly.

Afterthought advanced to the Round of 16, where it faced Slap 'Em Silly. In the beginning of the match, Slap 'Em Silly approached Afterthought while Jim Seller's machine got its spinning disc up to speed. Slap 'Em Silly just drove straight into Afterthought's disc and it didn't seem to phase Slap 'Em Silly at all. Slap 'Em Silly proceeded to push Afterthought a bit and Afterthought ran into the screws behind its square. Slap 'Em Silly then started pushing Afterthought into the screws a few more times, but Afterthought escaped by driving over the top of Slap 'Em Silly. Afterthought started spinning its disc again and Slap 'Em Silly was still unfazed by the disc hitting it. Slap 'Em Silly got behind Afterthought and started pushing it toward the screws behind the blue square. Afterthought tried to escape by driving straight into the screws. Afterthought escaped and both robots started pushing each other in the middle of the BattleBox. Afterthought got itself caught on the killsaws and Slap 'Em Silly tried to impale its rear spike through Afterthought's side. Both robots were driving around the BattleBox and Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought over the killsaws. The killsaws popped up and ripped the rear armor off of Afterthought. Afterthought drove backwards directly underneath the pulverizer, which ripped half of that side panel off of Afterthought. Afterthought drove straight at Slap 'Em Silly, which held it over another set of killsaws. The killsaws popped up and ripped off another armor piece clean off of Afterthought. Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought on the killsaws again and Afterthought started spinning its disc again. Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought toward the killsaws again, which popped up and ripped most of the rest of Afterthought's side armor off. Slap 'Em Silly got underneath Afterthought and pushed it a few more times, though Afterthought just slid off this time. Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought under the pulverizer and Afterthought escaped to the middle of the BattleBox. Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought from behind and Afterthought was flipped onto its back. Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought toward the pulverizer again, which dropped down and flipped Afterthought back on its wheels. As Afterthought was spinning its disc again, Slap 'Em Silly pushed Afterthought a few more times and took it to the spikestrip. The spikestrip went through one of the holes in Afterthought's disc and the wheels of the robot were lifted off the ground. Slap 'Em Silly hit Afterthought again, freeing the robot, but Afterthought wasn't moving and time ran out shortly after.

Due to the fact that Afterthought's spinning disc achieved next to nothing in terms of damage while the bot itself got manhandled throughout the fight, Slap 'Em Silly won the fight on a unanimous 45-0 judges' decision and Afterthought was eliminated from the tournament.

Lightweight Royal Rumble

Afterthought again participated the Lightweight Royal Rumble at the end of the competition. Afterthought started spinning its disc and charged into Rambite early on. Afterthought stopped moving after this hit, but its spinning disc was still going. Dr. Inferno Jr. began pushing Afterthought from the rear and Afterthought was still immobile. After being pushed around by The Crusher and Hexy Jr., it was eventually flipped onto its back by Hexy Jr. Shortly after, Rambite pushed Afterthought back onto its wheels and The Crusher got underneath Afterthought. Rambite pushed the immobile Afterthought next to the screws and the time ran out soon after. Dr. Inferno Jr. was declared the winner of the rumble.

This proved to be Afterthought's final fight in BattleBots as it did not return for Season 5.0 or any subsequent competitions.
